Thank you for the thoughtful reflection. I agree with your emphasis on the personal and proximate nature of sacrifice. It is worth noting, though, that the universalism—and abstract ideals—you rightly observe in liberalism are now more clearly manifest in many strands of the New Right. Appeals to nationalism, civilizational identity, and generic notions of the West often displace the reality of local ties, inherited practices, and familiar places. Invocations of a broad "Judeo-Christian civilization," defenses of the West as a whole, and calls for a national revival shift focus from lived experience to rhetorical abstraction. Memorial Day is not Veterans Day. We remember the nation without which there would be no stories to tell, and on Veterans Day those who make the nation itself a story worth telling.
